Skip a night but do a stop in Santa Barbara if need be , en route to LA.
Palm Desert rather than Palm Springs
Perhaps skip Phoenix & have an extra day / night in Sedona .
As far as I understand, Carmel weather is not very nice at this time of year, so we thought that we would just move on. I will definitely look at Palm Desert instead of Palm Springs. Reason for Palm Spring was that we found a hotel there with a huge pool complex that looked fun. For an extra day/night in Sedona, we would need to add another 1,5 hours of driving that day, which we would like to avoid.
