Yesterday, my wife called to deal with the annual fee on her Barclay US Airways card. I joined the conversation. At first nothing was offered by the relationship manager but a downgrade. I queried whether or not she was what is called the "retention department". She said yes. Then I specifically asked for a statement credit. Went on a hold for a while then came back with a 50% off the annual fee. I said that this is not exactly what we were hoping for but could she "sweeten the offer" with some form of promotion. On hold a while again. Then she offered that for the next three months, instead of 1 mile, we could get 2 miles and 3 on a US Airways purchase with a max of 8K miles. We decided to accept. Frankly, I think that if we had waited and called back once or twice more, we could have done better. No way of knowing for sure. Anyway, this is what we accepted. The bottom line is that nothing was offered. I had to specifically ask for what I wanted (on behalf of my wife) to get anything.

Feb 11 update: Wife received a letter in which the offer for the 2x points for three months was qualified for only groceries, gasoline and utilities. That was not the agreement. Called up and went thru all this on behalf of my wife. Knowing that someone else posted that they got 500 miles bonus on their next purchase, I asked for that. The relationship manager agreed to doing that and will keep the other promotion in play if we want to use it. I appreciate their flexibility and also the post of someone else regarding the 500 miles.
