Hotel rooms are especially susceptible to this. Let's think:

--Hotel beds have linens/sheets on them.
--Every day, Housekeeping enters your room and makes and/or strips the bed.
--If a small item is left on the bed, in between the covers, under a pillow, etc., it gets mixed and tossed like a salad.
--Those sheets go off to a giant bin and, quite possibly, off the property to be laundered at a mega facility where stuff is sorted and odd bits are flying everywhere.
--If still in the room, the odd bits can end up behind the mattress, under the frame, between the wall and a nightstand, pretty much anywhere.

Stuff the size of a pair of glasses could easily be truly "lost." No malice or evil at all; simply the logistics of constant cleaning of rooms.
