Odd. Everywhere I've worked, I've been able to expense and get reimbursed once I have paid for the ticket. Rhe reimbursement cycle usually matches up pretty well with the credit card cycle, so I'm cash neutral.
If I had to float the funds for tickets, I'd certainly not book early, likely at a cost of higher fares closer to the flight.
To OP - call AA and ask. We can't tell you what happened.
+1 - This is perhaps the key point. If you book 2-3 days ahead of travel and can't submit until after the trip, it's a minor irritant. But, if you book ahead, it's a risk. Companies which require employees to lay out their own cash ultimately encourage their employees to use walk-up fares in situations where that might not have been necessary.
