Avios to upgrade AA flights! good or bad idea?

I meant Avios, not Adios . . . D*** spell correction.

I have a fair number of Amex and Starwood points I can convert to Avios, but very few AA miles (until my >500K US miles become AA miles).

Can Avios be used for upgrades on AA metal? If so, would it ever make sense to do that?

If yes to both, how do I do it?

Note: I know I can use my US miles to get award flights on AA, but I want to use them for upgrading, not free flights. Also, given the number us US miles I have and regularly generate, it seems to make little sense to buy AA miles to do upgrades.
