I'm not going to take the time to look it up the definitions but turbulence is classified as light, moderate, severe & extreme, 99.9 percent of the time the worst any of us gets is moderate. You really don't want to think of last 2 especially extreme .
And "moderate" most people would think is severe to extreme, but I've heard people complain about "what a turbulent flight" when all we've had is occasional to continuous light chop.
Interestingly, I fly a fair amount of annual total miles on LAN longhaul, where the seatbelt sign is rarely what one could consider "abused." When the sign is on, everyone is seated. And, yes, the crew, too. Other than things needing immediate attention (i.e., overhead bin popping open, ill passenger, etc.), or for pre-arrival cleanup, it is safe for everyone, or it is safe for no one. I see a far lesser number of "disobedient" passengers" on LAN than I do on domestic US carriers. I can't say exactly what the correlation is, but it is certainly not because the people on certain routes (i.e., the Argentine passengers, for instance) follow rules and respect authority.
