Well as an Aussie who is a moderately social drinker, I would be offended if some crew member told me that I had had enough. I have never been carded onboard but it helps when you look and feel as old as I do. I just flew back from FRA today to DFW and had a drink to calm my nerves before we took off, had a Bloody Mary once we took off (and asked for another Vodka to give the thing a little more of a charge once the drink was half gone) and then sat quietly on whatever excuse they had for white wine for a few hours.

I certainly wasnt hammered - heck, I wasnt even warm - but what you describe above seems a little outrageous. I would have been waving my arms if that was me.
