They might (1) upgrade an SE to J. (2) upgrade a lower status. In the absence of either request, and there being J availability, bump an SE to J. But most likely an SE on a higher fare.

This said, last time I looked at tariffs, they were supposed to bump based upon checkin time and regardless of status. Of course it is impossible to check if they abey by that rule.
