No, it was 1968 when I work AC reservations. In fact, we'd often call people on heavily booked flights to certain destination a week out to confirm they still planned to fly. However, it was required on international itineraries (including the US) for the return segment that one called at least 48-hours in advance to reconfirm travel plans. And yes, I've not heard of this since the '80s, '90s, or '00s, or '10s!
