It seems that this is a matter of policy. Customer service told me this:
The ticket you purchased was an Economy Class buy up fare and not a First Class ticket. The fare you purchased is eligible for an instant upgrade to First Class if availability permits.
The fare bucket displayed in the 'Fare Class' box in the search results at the time of purchase was P. The travel agent invoice shows "Class BUSINESS/BUSFIRST." In fact, now that I'm finally looking more into the details of this I find that the
ONLY place where it says anything that could lead one to think that the purchased travel is in economy class is in the "eTicket Receipt" that says this for the flights in question:
Airline Reservation Code
XXXXXX
Class
BUSINESS/BUSFIRST
Seat Number
XXX
Baggage Allowance
2PC
Booking Status
CONFIRMED
Fare Basis
V2UP10N3
...And the

nly part of that is the "
V" at the start of the last line which I happen to know is for an economy fare. Of course, I never bothered to look at the fare basis as what was purchased was presented to me as a "P" fare. At
every point in the process -- purchase, confirmation, and receipt details -- it refers to the travel as being in "BUSINESS/BUSFIRST." The actual fare basis was never displayed except in that one line of the receipt and even that doesn't actually say the word "economy."
