It is a known bug. The same thing will happen if you call by phone to speak with an agent. You basically have to have an agent to build a brand-new reservation, and then give them your current PNR. Usually, their jaw will drop.

Mind you, it may not be a bug at all. It may just be that United's program wants to collect as much as possible.
