Sounds like the flights you're finding include segments on BA, which means their fuel surcharges are the factor. Look for trips where you stay off of BA metal. If traveling to Europe, it may not be easy, but it can be done.

Your other option is to pay double miles for an Anytime award on AA metal. That may be preferable to paying several hundred dollars in BA fuel surcharges.
