I don't believe that to be quite true. First, offering a refund is not AC being reasonable, it is the least that they are under obligation to do according to the tariffs.

However I also believe that they are under obligation to rebook on any airline with which they have an interlining agreement on a schedule that is satisfactory to the customer. Only if no such an arrangement is to be found than as a last resource, refunding is the only option left.

But really, it would be a good idea to check the tariffs.
