Separate from the issue at hand, since one way flex awards are 50% of r/t, why book it as a r/t unless you know you'll be traveling on those dates? Would think that would simplify this process.
A combination of expiring miles and wanting to take advantage of the online discount, not to mention that Skywards Flex ex- AU are 20% higher
