Because a new prepaid will be a totally different number. And he probably want to be able to use the same prepaid number when overseas. Of course, I am just speculating here. And just switch to the plan with global roaming s needed.

I don't see why that would be any different switching your prepaid to postpaid (and back) versus just opening up a new postpaid and cancelling.
