2. No, the system does not do that. The validity/value is checked after-the-fact. I believe that the even suggest holding on to the gift card information until after ticketing is completed successfully, for just this reason.
Lacking the information that you had originally received regarding the gift card (which would allow easy checking of the current value via AA.com), this is going to be difficult to resolve.
