Don't forget that Michael Kadoorie of Peninsula owns many of the hotels they operate so spending millions on mock-up rooms is much easier than if you are, say, Four Seasons, who only manages properties and can, therefore, not insist on millions being spent on mock-ups.
Mostly, hotel management companies only take over their hotels once they have been built, so if ergonomic mistakes are made, these are invariably down to the owners. It is a stupid system that costs everyone a lot of money. It would make much more sense if management and owners collaborated from the ground up, but this rarely happens.
At Peninsula, they have their own in-house design and technology teams. Michael Kadoorie is the one who loves all the latest technology, but he also insists, unusually in this business, that it is guest friendly. Peter Borer, President of Peninsula, is the design guru and it is he who deals with the look and the ergonomics of the rooms. It's a unique partnership.
