The policy apparently was changed during my challenge period without any notification from Delta - found out when bonus miles didn't post. When I called in they referred me to this page https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...age-bonus.html. Fine print is:

1) In order to receive the Medallion mileage bonus, a member must earn Medallion status through either the required Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs). Members who receive complimentary Medallion status are not eligible to receive the Medallion mileage bonus for the complimentary Medallion year (excludes members who receive complimentary annual Medallion status through the Million Miler™ program or Choice Benefits gifted Medallion status).

In a nutshell they are now considering a status match challenge as "complimentary status." The extra frustrating part is that even in the emails that confirm your completion of the status match challenge they even list the Medallion Mileage Bonus as the first in a "Host of benefits" that you will enjoy.
