1) Yes, you can and should through-check your luggage, just show both tickets
when checking in.
It is better to do so, because you will not need to claim your luggage in YYZ, you
will just identify it on a screen when clearing USA customs.

2) I don't understand why you had to purchase a YYZ-WAS ticket, why could it not
have been added onto the award ticket? Or even add it on now?
