The Sheraton CDG had a similar charge, but they also proactively offered to take it off at check-out.

I pick my own charities, thank you very much. It's a matter of principle and BTW I refuse to give to United Way for the same reason.
I view the charity fee as the equivalent of an undisclosed resort fee with no additional
services being covered. If hotel management wants to give to charity, they can do so
without making their decision into a junk fee imposed on guests.
Slightly off topic, but being the former United Way campaign chair at my previous employer, I need to point out that you can designate 100% of your United Way giving to a 501c3 charity of your choice. My previous employer also covered the administrative costs so 100% of the donation goes to the charity.
