I highly appreciate the advice from the luxury hotel forum regulars also when I for some reasons consider not staying in a luxury hotel in a particular place. They are the best advisors of when it is maybe not worth it staying in was is known as the luxury hotels in that specific area and know the best of the hotels on category below. The answers I see in other forums here, are often very different from the answers I get here.

Sometimes there are no real luxury option fitting us (like Big Sur where the best hotel(s) do no accept kids) and sometimes the luxury options are not know to be great, meaning I would rather stay somewhere else (like Shutters on the Beach - dependent on who you ask ;-) or the best hotel does not appeal to me (design reasons or missing pool or whatever). Sometimes there is a circle that one goes through as well; First deciding not to stay in the top hotel but then not finding a great alternative and ending up in the first option after all (like was the case with the FS George V for me in the other thread I mentioned).
