For what I have in mind on a cross-country car trip, email and light web access, this should be speedy enough?

You could try activating this on T-Mobile and using it with their free 200MB/month promotion. It may be worth trying to get a sim from them, and seeing whether it activates itself. ...
If you have the time/patience, baby steps here:

How would I try to activate it on T-mobile when is not one of the options in the activation app? Would it be possible to sign up on T-mobile with the Gobi's MEID and see if it mates? Any more about how the 200MB/month promotion and how I might get it if you have the time/patience

Any baby steps would be appreciated....

From experience with a different Gobi equipped unit, the Verizon experience is a nightmare
A few years ago I had pretty good experience with Verizon, and you had told me then that the coverage was better and speeds faster than AT&T. You were right

- it should not lock it to Verizon, but you may need to do a clean install to make it work if you used it on VZW.
I can do that if needed.... Uninstall the Qualcomm driver set I presume.

My advise, if you really need data on the go, get a prepaid Mifi and go through that. It'll be much faster (LTE) and offer better control of cost.
I've thought about that, but the attraction of not carrying one more device is large. I do have an older T-mobile "Rocket" USB WWAN (which you also through your old Deal-of-the-Day put me onto) -- I wonder what would happen if I put them sim from that into the Gobi? I last used it about a year ago.

Thanks for the very quick response and your expertise -- and patience
