Wanted to write a comment regarding the tradition which forces people to wait in line 7 hours, but changed my mind.
Last time I witnessed such lines was in 1990-1991 then Soviet Union when people were lining up for anything - soap, shoes, shampoo, toilet paper, toilet seat covers, you name it...
It is an Asian Confucian culture of gifting, part of the 禮"li" with a long history and tradition that many outside the culture would/could not understand.
