Not exactly the same. The award ticket will be booked in to X or XN and you can then call in and have the agent waitlist it for I/IN. Or you can monitor it and call in when you see the award space open up.
If you are seeing I and R on the long-haul flights you want I'd grab them ASAP and work on the feeder flight after the fact.
Thanks! Yeah I definitely wanted to get the I/R space on the tpac segments before that dries up. There's a good amount in Oct right now (was seeing R9s and I5s). Ended up putting her on a different SFO-PDX segment than me since there was no X space today, so I'll have to watch that anyway to switch her to my flight when (if) it opens up.

Agreed. Though I did end up finding R on those segments too, so one less thing to have to monitor in reservations is always welcome.
