Unless you've clicked the AA only button, aa.com will automatically search for AS flights. (Try a search for an off-peak time and see for yourself.)
Whether redeeming AAdvantage miles or BA Avios, only the lowest-tier AS flights are available.
Let me know if I'm not doing it right:
AA.com - go to the flight awards tab, input SAN-OGG with dep/ret dates. A calendar shows up and the dates show the lowest miles on that date; 45k in my example.
If I'm doing it right, I'm guessing i'm not maximizing usage of my Avios points since I'll pay 90k miles for a round trip ticket per person. My best option might be that I just pay the AS price and get a AS cc and use the companion ticket for $100 feature.
Appreciate your help in this - I'm learning a bit more here that will come in handy when I retire and will no longer be able to depend on mileage points earned via work air travel. Someday I plan on doing one of those RTW OneWorld trips
