Thanks for the explanation. Not sure I've entirely got my head around it but I guess it's tied into the date of the outbound leg.
Anyway, I've booked CW out and WT+ back. The WT+ is changeable so perhaps I will be lucky and an upgrade option might appear.

The discount CW fare (I) you were originally seeing for the outbound has a 28 day prepurchase requirement. This could be combined with a discount F return fare (A).
The CW fare you were then seeing for a <28 day departure was a higher fare CW fare class, which could not be combined with a discount F fare so you were seeing a more expensive F fare also.
