I have always made do by leaving my bags at the hotel and going sightseeing until I can check in... no big deal. Vacation travel with a baby is a bit different, though. I'm looking at a flight that gets me into TPE for 05:30 and I think I will have no choice but to bite the bullet and book the night before so that I check in very early in the morning. That will be a first.
