Rubbish seat selections.. any ideas?

I'm flying SAN-LHR on 19th May in a party of 4 - booked Premium Economy (T)

I have CX gold, so am able to book seats in advance for free (can't believe you have to pay!).

Haven't flown BA in a long time - when i went to book our seats i thought the seat booking tool was broken - so few seats in Premium Economy!

The plane is a 777 - in this configuration http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Bri...777-200B_2.php

Initially, only seats 13F, 14E and 14F were showing as selectable - so i left it alone.

I've logged in today, and it is now showing us in 12A, 12D, 12G and 12K - so all over the place.

It's an open jaw flight (outbound is LHR-SFO), so as far as i understand i won't get offered to upgrade via MMB - i have AMEX points i could convert to Avios (but unlikely to get 4 seats), or would consider paying money to upgrade to CW - but i expect the price is prohibitive?

Is this as good as BA gets? (yes, i know, i didn't buy the most expensive flights in the world - £1249 ea. but my experience with Virgin has always been good at similar prices - only went BA to avoid the drive back to LAX)

Any suggestions on whether i should switch to at least pick the two seats next to each other so my parents can hold hands?!!
