I flew in First for Sydney to Bangkok (747) and then a few days later in First again from Bangkok to London (A340) and I much preferred the A340 to the 747. The whole experience was better, the crew, the feel of the cabin, quieter. Mind you there were only 4 people in F in total which made it nice, if I had been full it might have been different.
I just did the same type of itinerary, but I thought that the 747 was significantly better than the A340. The lack of space in the cabin in general made the A340 feel cramped, I really liked having the bathrooms at the back of F on the 747 with no curtains to duck through and space to walk around a little without disturbing the other pax.
It is definitely a case of personal preference but the level of privacy on the 747 is clearly higher than the A340.
