I've never traveled to NZ so can't comment on the price,s however just for comparison I managed to score $120 return flight between Melb-->Sydney and $250 return flight for Melbourne-->Gold Coast.

Air New Zealand is having some sales at the moment flying to Auckland/Christchurch in May/June for about $250 return, best prices I've seen for a long time!
Flying within New Zealand, isn't expensive unless your flying Regional routes at last minute notice. The average lead-in fare for NZ would be around $79, with plenty of availability. Lead in fares on AKL-WLG are around $59 and with AKL-CHC $69.

NZ matches JQ's lead-in fare most of the time, so unless there is a major sporting event or you booking on the same week.
