Better NOT make that assumption and check the cancellation policy on your reservation instead.

Exactly. Many hotels across all chains in major cities the cancellation policy has been 24 to 48 hours before arrival. I have seen 72 hours in not so rare occasions and not from resort hotels either.

In our recent 35 days long trip, ONLY Hilton San Francisco Bayfront (SFO) has the generous same day cancellation policy. The rest are 24 to 48 hours (City hotels) with Conrad Bali 72 hours.

Read the fine print and if you are going to a different time zone, better note that on reservation as well.
