Even if the fare was the same, the taxes are much higher in LHR than YYZ...
I would in this case connect via YYZ (though I don't live in YEG and there are TWO nonstop LHR flights to my Canadian place of residence.)

Air Canada's business plan is not Edmonton's business plan.
Wait until the City annexes the airport. Then it is going to become very interesting.
I know bank managers in HKG that command HK$100+k/month salaries that have flown out of other airports to save money (positioning to TPE/SZX)
They have also been willing to connect for 2-3 thousand fare savings (they primarily fly J.)
