Good move !
Just some background, but a decade or so ago I was returning from LAX to FRA via LH. The flight was full, according to the LH Customer Service agent, and all passengers would be limited to one carry-on item. Having a LH Rimowa carry-on case, and a leather attaché (containing my laptop), the CS agent suggested I keep my Rimowa carry-on, the larger but least expensive of the two.
Reluctantly, I checked my attaché, and then got into a long line, for a long time. Looking around I saw purses, beauty cases, AND carry-on cases, all held by single passengers. ???
Arriving in FRA after a terrible flight ( FA requested I change my specified seat, ran out of meals, etc. ) my one and only thought was the state of my computer and attaché, in that order. All was in order.
Having time, I went into then LH Skyshop to look around. I was shown the then new LH Rimowa Bolero line, which included the Notebook case or bag. The sales rep demonstrated how the hidden sleeve in the back worked to slip over the hand pull, and a light went off.
I asked: "Would this item then be considered a "personal item" on LH, if I slung up off the case and under my arm ? " Answer: "Yes, like a purse, you could do this, yes." ( Smart sales rep !).
I made the purchase, and left with the black and silver Notebook case over the carry-on, having one hand free for my attaché. Back home I experimented with a laptop, and how much else could be packed inside the Notebook case ( quite a bit ).
When boarding, if it appears that the eagle eye of the GA's are out looking for items they can check, I take the case off the carry-on, clip the should padded strap on the Notebook case, and put it under my shoulder. Black bag on black jacket or shirt does not stand out, and the Notebook case is never bulging and over packed, either.
Nor a problem since with checked items, as the GA eyes usually gravitate downwards to a Rimowa carry-on case, and my well-shined shoes. Alu or polycarbonate as a product tends to looks light weight, as long as it doesn't groan or squeak, very similar to your nice B&R " second bag. "
