It depends on the fare class you are willing to fly. Some fare classes allow stopovers, some don't. Business and first class fares often allow stopovers and economy fares sometimes do.

If the fare class does not allow stopovers, which is very common with the cheapest economy fares, you will have to do an open jaw DEL-LAX/SFO-DEL. The domestic fares LAX-DFW-SFO are not outrageously priced, particularly if you are willing to fly an airline other than AA.
