That was my thought as well. I enjoyed the day course here on my last trip: http://www.fujiyoshi.com/en/

I spent two nights in Atami (not there though, they don't take solo travelers) going from Kyoto to Tokyo and spent the day at Fujiyoshia. Quite enjoyable but I've only been to 3 onsen so I'm hardly an expert.
