I do however agree that it's more polite to share this information with the hotel from the moment that you know it, instead of waiting to announce it until check-in.
I suspect it depends on the cancellation date. If the hotel has same day or previous day cancellation, then it should be easier. If hotel has 3 day cancellation, then by the time you're halfway through a 4 day reservation the last day is already uncancellable.
