My understanding is that you get nothing back one the award has started. Which is a drawback to having a free domestic one way (with a layover) preceeding an international award.

Once I had booked SFO-LAX-layover-HKG but cancelled the SFO-LAX portion because I didn't want to lose the refundability of the LAX-HKG award.
