Complex intinerary - advice for checked baggage

I have a complex journey tomorrow:

BA ticketed flight on BA metal to US hub
BA ticketed flight on AA metal to 2nd hub
Delta ticketed hub on Delta metal to final destination (back of beyond)

The first 2 flights are on a common PNR, and have a comfortable connection time.

The second connection is quite tight (approx 1 hour, but well within rules if it were a delta to delta connection), and within the same terminal.

I appreciate I am taking a gamble with this - if it pays off I get to destination in 1 day (it was the only itinerary that could possibly do this), if it doesn't, no big deal - I'll fund a hotel and pay cash to fly the final hop the next morning.

Now to my questions:

Should I ask BA to check my bags through to final destination?
Will they even consider this?

I'm in 2 minds - if it all goes to plan clearly I'll have the best chance of making the final connection. However.... what could possibly go wrong?? My sensible head tells me I'll never see my luggage again

Any one have any thoughts/experience/advice?
