It's 25 minutes to Staten Island. You must exit the ferry, and wait for the next one. The return to Manhattan is 25 minutes. Depending on the midweek schedule, I'd suggest a minimum of 70 minutes.

my opinion and that of others I know too. On my trips on the ferry when on holiday (I do it to get some sea air and for the city views) I have heard tourists complaining that the view of the SoL was not as good as they had been lead to believe. Of course your opinion may differ. I just gave mine.
