You could also log into LH with the Winderoe record locator and try to assign seats there. It worked for us the first time. (Just go to lufthansa.com, go to my bookings and then select seats).
You're a lifesaver, I went to LH's website and was able to select/change my seats. I tried calling AC previously and you're right the hold time was atrocious, half the time I couldn't even get through because the line was busy.
