[UuA] "Downgrade" Question...Wondering If Anyone Has Tried It

I've got a question and wonder if anyone has had an experience doing this: I am booked LAX-MAD RT via LHR. I purchased WT+ and upgraded to CW with 40,000 Avios. That means my LHR-MAD legs are in CE. I have experienced CE before, and frankly unlike U.S.A. domestic business/first, it's just not worth blowing the 15,000 Avios to upgrade those segments. What I wanted when I got the ticket online was the upgrade from LAX-LHR.

I am considering calling BA to see if they can "downgrade" me to ET so I can get back the 15,000 Avios for the LHR-MAD and back legs. I know I can get the question answered by calling BA, but before I even try and they possibly say yes, has anyone ever tried to later downgrade part of an upgrade booking? And if so, were there problems and nightmares, such as for example, the whole booking getting screwed up...loosing the assigned seats (I got a choice seat upstairs in a 744) on the legs that were not downgraded.

Thanks for anyone who is in the mood to tell stories (good and bad experiences).
