Unhappy Charged for Overnight keep of damaged vehicle / no alternatives available.

Hi All,

Longtime reader, joined just recently, and first post!

Had a question about my options with a Hertz rental I had last weekend. I had upgraded to a Tahoe on a Friday night around 11pm while I was in Cleveland, was in town to see family and go to the Detroit Auto Show. The interior lights weren't on at the time, but I couldn't find the switch for them so I did a quick look with my phone and the interior was clean, so I put my stuff in the truck and left.

As I came home that night I found the switch and hit the lights, which revealed that the rear dome light was held in with blue painter's tape. I called the CLE desk and they told me to drop the truck off for a new one the next morning.

The next morning (around 10am) I got back to the airport and went in to swap the truck, which I did for another Tahoe.
This one had a loose headrest cover and the seat was torn, so I went back inside.
I was given another Tahoe, which was not clean beyond the front seats.
I was given a Expedition, which had 50,000 miles, three different brands of tires on it, and a TPMS fault.
I was then given a Suburban, which upon starting it, the oil pressure gauge spiked to 80 psi and stayed there.

After five trucks with faults, and the desk rep looking at each issue, I was then given the alternative of a Ford Escape (I needed 6-pass capability for the weekend) which was actually in working and clean condition to take but would not meet my needs. The agent could offer me no other alternatives.

At this point my fiance and I had been at the car rental terminal at CLE for over an hour and I asked to have my rental cancelled due to inability to provide service. The agent and manager demanded they charge me for the original Tahoe for one night because "I had kept it overnight", despite my insistence and the rep I had spoken with the night before confirming I should keep it until morning.

I'm on President's Circle with Hertz and will be raising this issue with them, I was wondering if anyone had advice on a similar experience.

I was able to get a Ford Flex from Avis through my company account, and the fiance liked it, so situation was defused before we got over to my parents' place.
