Obviously because EK has been flooding every market it enters with more seats than can be filled, cheap through fares in economy, and thus driving other carriers out of business. It can sustain such over abundance because it capitalizes its aircraft in a way that cuts overheads below those of its competitors. This has been particularly true of Australia and New Zealand. On an average day at AKL you can see three or more EK 777s parked!
