I'd completely avoid wiring from a bank. I spent 3 hours in Bancolombia this morning filling in forms to legalize an incoming giro and the forms are the same for outgoing giros. It sucks balls.

I think it matters where you are in the USA. For example, if you are in SoFlo then you will be close to a branch of Servientrega which might be an economical way to send. Or at least not as uneconomical.
