I'll admit I was naive and caught out by Qantas "fuel charges" - by the time I realised I was committed to the FF program, and stuck there until I got to a level of redeeming an award (and stuck with the "fuel surcharge".) It's AA for the LAX-Syd flights from now on for me - might even look into Virgin.
