I am currently in Oz and am using AA miles for domestic flights. Fantastic deal at 10K per one way on Qantas (includes 1 checked bag). For short hops (like SYD-MEL or BNE-MEL), BA Avios are superior, but 10K AA will get you Perth to Gold Coast.
