I first noticed this a few years ago. The "two transactions" excuse was given to me then. I seem to recall that my purchase may have appeared as two transactions on my BA Amex card statement.
Nevertheless, I regard even £4.50 as unacceptable for the money I spend on premium cabin seats. In comparison, I used to fly Ryanair a lot and never resented the credit card fees added to the bargain fares I was purchasing (e.g., £2 return fare STN-MAD!).
How ridiculous that they choose to process the payments in this manner! I can only presume its a revenue generating excercise (although a small one).
