If all is as you say, that was one horrible agent. The record would show the original flights and times, the change, and that the result was not workable. It should be US responsibility to fix it at no charge to you - but the refund really muddies the water - did you specifically ask for a refund or agree to it?
I agreed to it because I was told I had no recourse.
