I ended up splitting the baby. I bought UA one way EWR-DEN-NRT-SIN (flat beds EWR-DEN-NRT, then Y
to SIN; should have gone via HKG probably for better upgrades from HKG to SIN, but I didn't know at the time). And then on the way back I redeemed an award in TG F and LH F, via BKK, CDG, and FRA. (Unless the Thailand protests mess up my routing...I have my fingers crossed, because I was really looking forward to TG and LH F.)
