IMO $400 is well worth the price to book into to W. (It will actually book into AF A, which is not upgradeable to J.) While some hate the AF W seats, I personally like them. (Think domestic F size, but hard shell.) I've not tried VS W, but it looks pretty good. In addition, you'll get RDM and MQM bonuses.

While I'd rather fly in J, the price differential is not worth it IMO, and it's nearly impossible to upgrade from lower fares without paying careful attention to obscure upgrade rules and virtually non-existent inventory.
